I Thought I Was Sane
- I Thought I Was the Only Sane One
- With help from friends and coworkers, my wife entered an eight-week recovery program for alcohol and drug abuse. During her stay at the center, my children and I visited on a number of occasions. On one visit I was introduced to a one-week program designed for the relatives of those in treatment. I attended the program and my life changed forever.
- I came to realize that my problems weren't unique and my life was indeed out of ocntrol. Prior to my wife's treatment, I thought I was the only sane one around and that I was in control. All was well, other than the problem of the alcoholic wife. I learned I'm not strong enough to control anyone else, just my own actions.
- After returning to my home community, I was instrumental in starting up an Al-Anon group. We recently celebrated our First anniversary. It's amazing how my life has changed. Not only do I have the gift of the group's wisdom and support, I can also relate to and share my wife's continued recovery. Our two children, a 13-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, are also an integral part of our family recovery. Barely a day goes by without a thought, slogan, reading, or discussion about the wonders of recovery being shared in our home.
- The members' love and understanding make it easier to open up and share even the most difficult of feelings. I can truly say that because of my continued involvement in Al-Anon, I am as happy, content, and serene as I've ever been in my adult life.
